Houjicha Green Tea

Houjicha Green Tea is a Japanese green tea made from Bancha tea which is harvested later in the season. To prepare the tea leaves after harvesting, It is roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal while most Japanese teas are usually steamed. The tea is fired at a high temperature, altering the leaf color tints from green to reddish-brown.

To make sure our Houjicha tea remains as it was meant to be grown, harvested and prepared, we buy ours directly from the family in Japan which grows, harvests, prepares and sells the tea. We buy several teas from this same family.  After almost 100 years, it is apparent they know what they are doing.

Houjicha, when steeped is a light reddish-brown color, with a mild, roasted aroma and a toasted, nutty flavor. You might pick up some caramel notes.

Because of its mildness, Houjicha is a popular tea to serve during the evening meal or after, before going to sleep. If you are a fan of Genmaicha tea, you might want to try Houjicha, since they both share a roasted flavor. It became one of Rick’s favorites when sampling the first cup. The nutty, roasted flavor is very distinctive. Let’s see what you think.

Steeping Instructions
Hot tea brewing method: Put 1 slightly heaping tsp of loose tea for each 8oz of water in the cup or teapot. Pour the boiled but slightly cooled water over tea. Steep 3 to 7 minutes. Milk and Sugar are not recommended. Makes a wonderful Iced Tea as well.

Iced Tea: For a Liter or quart use 2 heaping Tbsp. of loose tea into teapot. Pour 1 1/4 cup boiling water on tea. Steep 5 minutes. Quarter fill serving pitcher straining tea. Add Ice. Top up with cold water, garnish & sweeten to taste.
