Spearmint, (mentha spicata), is one of the many varieties of mint. Spearmint Leaves are used for many purposes around the world. It is steeped in most countries as a tea. It is also widely used as a cooking spice or herb. It is also used in many countries around the world as a folk remedy for medicinal purposes, such as a digestive aid.
Spearmint has long been use to calm the stomach if upset, and help with nausea and motion sickness. It is chewed to freshen the breath. It is also used to relieve nasal congestion through steam infusion as well as when drank as a tea.
As a tea, it can be drank plain or blended with either a black or green tea. If blended with green tea, it is called Moroccan Mint Tea. Peppermint is used more often to blend Moroccan Mint Tea, which is how we blend it.
Spearmint has many uses in many cuisines. It is used to make mint jelly and mint sauce to serve with lamb dishes. Add a bit to vegetables like roasted potatoes, carrots and salads. You will find it used in Middle East cooking in traditional dishes like Shish Kafta (grilled beef or lamb kebobs), Tabbuleh, yogurt sauces, stuffed grape leaves and many others.
Spearmint is used in various beverages, such as the mojito and mint julep. Iced Tea is flavored with spearmint. Add it to fruits, fruit desserts and iced creams to add a minty touch.
We also carry Peppermint Leaves, which are also around the world in many of the same ways in teas, for cooking and as folk remedy.
