Formosa Gunpowder Green Tea – Rick’s Tea Face 10-14-2025
I can’t believe I haven’t Tea Faced Formosa Gunpowder Green Tea before. I’m so ashamed of myself, I made myself drink 2 cups before writing this and I loved them both. To be quite honest, I drink Gunpowder periodically throughout the year when I want a unique green tea, which is so smooth, I can drink all day and not have that grassy flavor linger with me. Also, how Gunpowder is processed gives it a slightly, roasted flavor, but so mild, it’s almost floral. The processing also gives it a medium amber color, darker than most green teas. If you’re a green tea drinker, that doesn’t make any sense, so you have to taste it to know what I’m talking about. Still need more convincing since I’m not making any sense? I understand.
Green teas have to be heated in some form so they don’t ferment and oxidize into a black tea. Steaming is the most common way. Gunpowder is first withered, steamed, then rolled into the characteristic shape, resembling gunpowder pellets. They are then pan-fired to dry them and stop the oxidation process. It’s this pan-firing which can give some versions the slightly smokey flavor. Ours doesn’t have that telltale smokiness. It’s just a nicely balanced tea. With a history going back to the 600’s, sipping it is definitely a throwback to a very historical tea.
