Houjicha – Rick’s Tea Face 02/02/2026

Back to my favorite teas I’m cutting through I started in early January. This week I’m sipping Houjicha, which coincidentally has exploded in sales the last 6 months. I’m told it’s being hyped online for many reasons. I’ve sipped it since we opened because I like the flavor. Here are a few more tidbits of why it’s in my tea rotation.

Houjicha is a Japanese green tea, but instead of being steamed during processing, as most green teas are, it’s heated in a porcelain crucible with charcoal. The result turns the tea leaf a beautiful medium brown color. It has a light roasted, nutty flavor. The roasted scent is also captivating. It’s very unique flavor unlike any other tea, which is why it has a loyal following. Also, notice the steeped color. It’s a beautiful reddish brown, toasted color. It’s caught on as base for flavored teas, lattes with additional flavors and ingredients. There are plenty online. I just drink it plain.
