Wakocha Japanese Black Tea – Rick’s Tea Face 01-22-2025
Wakocha Japanese Black Tea is a must-try for any Japanese Tea aficionado, Black Tea Sipper, or even our Green Tea Friends. Japan isn’t known for black teas, but Wakocha has been a niche tea in Japan for over 200 years. There are tea families who only grow and produce black teas, as well as tea houses in Japan which only serve their black tea. Wakocha is made from a green tea cultivar, but oxidized as you would a traditional black tea from India, Sri Lanka, or other black tea countries. The result is a smoother black tea without the astringency of these other country’s black teas.
How else is it different you ask? Well, the color is lighter with a redder, more coppery. The flavor is brighter, lighter and very suited for an afternoon when you want t avoid heavier teas. When I first sampled various Wakochas from our Japanese tea family, I made them along side of our English Breakfast. The difference was striking. Try it for yourself an see if it deserves a spot in your tea pantry. We have more information about it on our website. To look at it closer, please click HERE.
