Description

Kenilworth Estate Black Tea

Kenilworth Estate Black Tea has a malty flavor that is full of life and very smooth. This is a wonderful tea for sipping after dinner or in the afternoon when a bolder tea is appreciated. Kenilworth is known for its strong, full-bodied character. The cup is coppery bright with golden notes. Some characterize this tea as having a slight citrusy aroma, with sweet juicy notes of mandarin peel or grapefruit, refreshing texture and balanced astringency. We call it a fine cup of tea with a smooth finish.

The Kenilworth area has been a major tea plantation region since around 1870. This estate was planted in tea around 1900 by an English pioneer who named the estate after the famous Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire, England. Kenilworth estate is situated close to the town of Ginigathena in the Central Province of Sri Lanka – a part of the Nuwara Eliya district. Fields of the estate overlook the rapids of the ‘Kelani Ganga’, famous for its white water rafting. The river originates in the Adam’s Peak range and in its course plunges over the Aberdeen Falls.

The altitude at which tea is planted greatly affects the flavor, even in the same region. Our Kenilworth Estate Tea is grown around 1400′ above sea level, making it what is known as a mid-grown tea. Tea is grown in this area even up around 4000′, such as our Kirkoswald Estate Tea. Same area, much different flavors.

Kenilworth tea is known around the world for its full bodied strong liquors (liquors is a tea tasting term for taste of the tea in the cup) and is considered to be the hallmark of Ceylon medium grown teas. This estate receives an average rainfall of 190 inches per year. The location of the estate is unique in that both the South West and North East monsoons bring rain to this particular region.

We carry other Breakfast, Estate and Blended Black teas, so you can change up the subtle character of your morning cuppa.  Each have their own character, body, strength and feel.  Each has their own loyal following and many of our friends buy several so they can change up their mornings.  You might want to consider our Irish Breakfast, Scottish Breakfast, or English Breakfast Teas, or our Kirkoswald Estate, or even our Castleton Estate Darjeeling.
