Poppy Seeds

Poppy Seeds

Poppy Seeds are grown mostly in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. They are tiny, nutty flavored seeds. Record of their cultivation and use go back over 3000 years to the Mediterranean region. They are used for both flavor and decoration.

In European countries like Poland, Serbia, Greece, Spain, and other Slavic and Balkan countries, they are used in baking recipes like breads, poppy seed rolls, kolache, streusel, and strudels. In the United States, we use them on rolls, cakes, breads, bagels, cookies and muffins. One familiar use is in Lemon Seed Poppy Seed loaf. They are also made into salad dressings, spice blends,

In India, they are simmered in milk with walnuts, cardamom and other spices for a refreshing drink. They also add them to naan breads, gravies, vegetable and curry dishes.

The seeds are also use in Asian recipes, like chicken salads. In Scandinavian cooking, they are used in breads, Danish, cookies and other sweets.

If you are looking for a delicious dessert recipe which uses them, we have an easy Lemon Poppy Seed Crisps cookie recipe.

We also have an easy Pita Bread recipe which uses poppy seeds in a variation.
