Apple Pie Filling
We’re bringing you our recipe for a great Apple Pie Filling. It’s very simple, but most pie filling recipes are. The key to many pie fillings is a good spice blend. We took the time working on our blend so that it has a nice balance between the various spices. Just enough of each spice so that nothing overpowers the other spices. The little touch of ginger adds a little extra something, which we find ties everything together. You can use this filling for apple pies, tarts, cobblers or wherever a pie filling is needed.
6 to 8 Granny Smith Apples sliced thinly
⅓ to ½ cup sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon Apple Pie Spice
¼ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
We like to use a Pie Funnel Pie Bird when making our pies, which helps to keep your bottom crust drier by venting out some steam. The Pie Bird also helps to keep the pie from bubbling over. These are a very old, very British pie baking accessory.
Lay your bottom pie crust in your pie pan. Set your Pie Bird in the middle of the bottom crust. Fill your pre-made crust around the Pie Bird. Make sure no pie filling gets under the Pie Bird. Place on top crust, with the Pie Bird poking through a slit you cut in the top crust. Bake according to your recipe. When done, remove from the oven. Let set for whatever time your recipe says, then cut and enjoy.
