Samovar Tea – Rick’s Teas Face 08-05-2024
How about a legendary tea, which you might like, might not like, but should at least read about and try? Here’s our Samovar Tea. It also goes by Russian Caravan, or just Caravan, which is how it got it’s name. It’s history and characteristics should at least make you curious. It’s also one of our newer teas, which we crafted in-house after many requests for it.
Historically, some teas were transported from China to Europe via caravans taking up to 6 months. The tea was in large bundles, probably made of burlap or other looser weave to allow air to circulate and not let the tea spoil while be transported. At night, the caravanners would build a fire to keep cook with, provide light and keep warm. The smoke from the fires would filter into the bundles of tea, adding a light smoky flavor to them. Hence, the main characteristic if Russian Caravan, or Samovar Tea.
Now, don’t confuse Samovar with Lapsang Souchong Tea, which is a black tea, smoked over fires to achieve a deep smoky flavor.
Samovar or Caravan teas are nowadays a blend of teas since it’s a little difficult to replicate the long caravans. Samovar is a lighter flavor than Lapsang, but we still start with our Lapsang, which is exquisitely smoky, a true fan favorite. We then blend in some Indian Assam for bold richness, and Formosa Oolong to soften the flavor, closer to the smooth, lighter smokiness of what a caravan fire might impart. The result? The smoky scent, smooth smokiness, and a taste you really need to experience to appreciate.
