Samovar Tea

Samovar Tea is our version of what traditionally has been known as Russian Caravan Tea, or just Caravan Tea.

Caravan Tea has a long history. Tea was transported from China to Europe by many routes. One was through Russia on caravans, rather than through a southern route. The southern route was through humid, tropical sea conditions which caused the tea to suffer in taste and quality. The preferred route was across land via Mongolia and Russia. It could take 6 months to make the trek, so it had a long time to develop it’s flavor. During the journey, the bundles of tea were unloaded from the camels every night. The smoke from the campfires became infused into the tea bundles, giving the tea a light smoky flavor.

Over time, Caravan Teas became a blended tea to replicate the light smoky flavor by using several teas from several countries, not just China. The common tea is Lapsang Souchong, a smoked tea from the Fujian Provence. High quality Lapsang teas have a very distinct smokiness created by drying the tea leaves over pine wood fires. Lapsang provides a base tea and flavor for Caravan teas.

We craft our Samovar by starting with our luxury Lapsang Souchong base tea. We blend in Assam from the Assam Valley of India for boldness and to reduce the level of smokiness. We then blend in Formosa Oolong to further moderate the smokiness and add a smoothness.

Our resulting Samovar Tea is a bold but smooth tea with a light smoky flavor. Curious? Give it try.

Steeping Instructions
Hot Tea Steeping Instructions: Put 1 heaping teaspoon of loose tea for each 8oz of water in your tea cup or teapot. Using a tea infuser to hold the tea makes it easier. Pour boiling water over the tea. Steep for 3 to 5 minutes.

Iced Tea Instructions: For a Liter or quart use 2 heaping Tbsp. of loose tea into teapot. Pour 1 1/4 cup boiled water on tea. Steep 3 to 5 min. Strain tea into pitcher, adding water and/or ice to complete the liter or quart. Garnish & sweeten to taste.
