British Mixed Spice

British Mixed Spice, or British Baking Spice, is a standard spice blend used in many British baked goods recipes. There are many versions, but most share the same basic ingredients, which include nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, cardamom , clove and ginger.  We used these spices when we crafted our blend. Unlike some baking spices, which are heavy on the cinnamon or nutmeg, British Mixed Spice is more balanced, making it adaptable to many more recipes. You will read that because of this balance, and the flavor the blend imparts, if recipe calls for Mixed Spice, you can’t use an apple pie or pumpkin pie spice.  The flavor isn’t even close and the result won’t be the same.

We use it in our Welsh Cake Recipe, which has a lighter spice flavor. You will find in many other British favorites like Sticky Toffee Pudding, Hot Cross Buns, Mince Pies, Fruit Cakes, Scones, Carrot Cake, and many more.  Thinking back, it’s Mixed Spice which gave our British grandmother’s recipes their special flavor.
