The Japanese Ceramic Mortar and Pestle is unique to our store. We get requests for smaller sets, so when we saw these, we knew we had to offer them. The bowl is ceramic and the pestle is wood. The textured bowl is just the right shape for crushing and grinding. For many recipes, freshly grinding your spices in whole form is preferred. You’ll also see recipes having you grind or crush the spices after toasting them. It helps release the flavors.
The smaller 3.25″ bowl is just the right size for grains, small spices and other small tasks. If you are like us, we keep both a small and a large set in our kitchen. They both have their place when we’re cooking and want to work with smaller and larger jobs. This smaller size for small quantities of spices and our larger one for larger quantities.
