Description
Allspice Berries Whole
Allspice Berries are an individual spice, not a seasoning blend with multiple ingredients. It is indigenous to tropical Central America and the West Indies. Aptly named, Allspice has a pleasantly warm and fragrant aroma of cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. They are sold both whole and ground. Many prefer to buy them whole, so they can grind them when needed to be fresher. They are commonly used in pickling or in other spice blends.
Allspice was introduced to Europe by the Spanish who brought it back from the West Indies. They are very versatile, since they compliment both savory and sweet recipes. Commonly used in Caribbean jerk dishes and other West Indies recipes, you will find Allspice in cakes, puddings as well as in pickling spices, marinades, chutneys and other desserts. You can also use them to season poultry, squash and other game dishes like venison.
Besides the Caribbean, they are used around the world in many cuisines across the globe. They are found in Indian, Middle Eastern and some European recipes including German. Allspice is also used as one of the main ingredients in Cincinnati-style chili.
We also carry Ground Allspice.
