Description
Spanish Superior Grade Saffron Threads
Spanish Superior Grade Saffron Threads is one grade below Coupe Grade Saffron, but is still considered a top grade since the threads are a rich red and have very few yellow ends. This means it offers a potent aroma and flavor.
Saffron is grown in many countries around the world including Spain, Afghanistan, Iran, Greece, India, Morocco, Portugal, Australia, even the United States and others.
Saffron (Crocus Sativus) is the most expensive spice in the world because of its harvesting process which is all done by hand. It takes anywhere from 50,000 to 75,000 flowers to collect enough threads (the stigmas) for one pound of saffron. This is about 200,000 threads.
Saffron is the essential spice used in Spanish Paella, which gives it the familiar flavor and some color. It is also used to season Rice Pilaf, Italian Risotto, Pasta dishes, and tea. In India, it’s used in many dishes including Biryani. In France, it’s an ingredient in Bouillabaisse. It’s also used in many Portuguese dishes. You’ll find it used in seafood dishes, lamb dishes, and even in some ice cream dishes.
You will also see Saffron in breads and other baked goods. The flavor and color is unique, and popular around the world.
Saffron is used in spice blends, adding its unique flavor which helps to bring out the other spices. We use it in our Maharajah Curry Spice as one example.
Saffron has a long shelf life if properly kept in a tight glass jar, out of direct light and away from any heat. For best results, crumble or grind the thread just prior to use.
We also carry Spanish Coupe Grade Saffron, which is the top grade Spanish Saffron. It costs a bit more, but well worth the price of you’re looking for maximum flavor, aroma and quality.
