Description
Mexican Oregano
Mexican Oregano is an essential spice for Southwest, Mexican, Latin and South American cuisines. It is very full-bodied and has a slightly citrus profile which compliments the complex facets of the Southwest, Mexican and South American dishes. You will find it in meat dishes, soups, stews, bean dishes, egg dishes, and many more throughout these areas. It is grown throughout Mexico, Guatemala and other Central and South American countries. It is also grown in the Southwestern states.
While they share the same “oregano” name, Mexican Oregano isn’t related to it’s Greek/Mediterranean Oregano “cousin”. In fact, Marjoram, which is sometimes called French Oregano is related to the Greek/Mediterranean variety, but used in very different dishes. They all share a similar flavor profile, but due to their flavor and scent differences, they aren’t really interchangeable.
One of our favorite uses for Mexican Oregano is New Mexican Posole, whose characteristic flavor is derived from the oregano…and New Mexican Red Chile Peppers, of course. The oregano compliments the hominy, and pork if you add it. To check out our Posole Recipe, please click HERE.
Mexican Oregano is also found in many dishes, including outstanding in fajitas, enchiladas, tacos, and in egg and cheese dishes, such as Huevos Rancheros. Add some to olive oil and brush it on grilled foods for Southwest touch. It is also ideal to combine with other spices for a Southwestern salt-free blend.
It is also a key flavor ingredient for Southwestern and Mexican chile and enchilada sauces. We have a classic New Mexican Red Chile Sauce, which uses Mexican Oregano for just the right flavor. To check out our recipe, please click HERE.
