Bancha Green Tea – Rick’s Tea Face 02/01/2023

I drink my green teas when I want the pure flavor of tea which existed long before tea was fermented as we know as a black tea. We have a large selection of unflavored green teas from China and Japan. I drink them all but the flavor of Japanese tea with their slight more grassy flavor is what I want sometimes, like today. And Bancha is what is in my cup.

Bancha is produced from a bottom part of tea leaves as well as from later-harvested tea. It brews a pale-yellow cup with a smooth yet robust flavor. It has a long and storied history. In Japan it is said that like the ancient culture of the Samurai and Geisha, the story of Bancha is intrinsically linked to the spirit of the country. That sounds like the makings of a pretty good reputation to us. We have more of its history on our website.

If you are a fan of green tea, but haven’t sipped any Japanese teas, then you really should. Bancha, Fukamushi, and the others all have different characteristics and stories linked to them. Many can be grassier than what you might be used to, but we find that once sipped, many prefer them to the lighter green teas. It’s all personal preference.
