Turmeric Ground

Turmeric Ground

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is the root of a plant which is in the same family as Ginger. The flesh is a bright orange and dries to a deep yellow-orange color. Turmeric Ground, or Ground Turmeric adds the familiar color to most blended curry powders. This flowering perennial has been cultivated for over 2000 years in India, China and the Middle East. Turmeric was worshiped in ancient times as one of the sun spices because of its yellow color. Turmeric is used as both a dye and a digestive aid. Turmeric is also gaining popularity among health advocates for many healthy properties.

Turmeric is one of the important and common spices for Indian Curry and Masala Blends along with coriander, cumin, pepper and a variety of other spices. Turmeric can be used to flavor egg dishes, basting liquids, sauces, poultry, fish, beans and lentils. Use with beans, chicken, eggs, fish, meat, rice and spinach.

Some of our curry blends in which we blend turmeric are Garam Masala, Madras Curry Spice, Maharajah Curry Blend and Vadouvan Curry.

We also blend a tea which has both Turmeric and Ginger, which has become a healthy tea combination for many.  We call it Twisted Turmeric Tea.  It has a wonderful lemony, minty flavor.

Ground Turmeric is also used in many recipes where the yellow color is needed, whether it adds flavor or not.  Turmeric is used in many Satay recipes, which gives the dish its characteristic golden color.  We have a delicious Singapore Chicken Satay Recipe which has Ground Turmeric as an ingredient.

Be careful when handling this as it will stain hands, cooking utensils and even your clothes.
