Japanese Curry Powder

Japanese Curry Powder is a staple in all Japanese kitchens. It is used to create very savory dishes. Like Indian and Thai curries, Japanese Curry is the sauce, into which meats and vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and onions are added. Curry powder was originally brought to Japan by the British from India, which is why they share some of the same spices. Over time it developed into a far more complex blend, with many more spices used in Japanese cuisine, and many more nuanced flavors to compliment the recipe you are making.

Japanese Curry Powders are blended from a dozen or more spices, similar to an Indian Madras Curry, but usually much more complex. The variety of spices give the blend many nuanced flavors and colors.

Most Japanese Curry dishes are served with rice or udon noodles. The traditional meats used in the recipes are chicken, beef, and pork. You will also find liberal use of tofu and other proteins.
